You Had a Bad Dream is a survival horror game
The game tells the story of a child who lost their favorite toy in the park the day before. Unable to stop thinking about it, the child begins dreaming about the missing toy. What starts as a simple search soon turns into a terrifying nightmare.
As we wander through narrow, maze-like corridors looking for the toy, monsters relentlessly chase us. If we manage to find the toy before they catch us, we move on to the next level. If they catch us first, however, we have to start the level all over again.
There are six levels in total, and each one becomes more challenging than the last. The mazes grow larger, more monsters appear, and escaping them becomes increasingly difficult. Since the layout of the corridors is randomly generated every time, finding the toy often comes down to luck. Sometimes you might end up running into a dead end with a monster right behind you, forcing you to restart the level.
One mechanic that helps the game stand out is the **Dream Effect**. With it turned off, the game feels fairly straightforward. As you increase the Dream Effect, however, the dream gradually transforms into a full-blown nightmare. Your vision becomes more restricted, the eerie sound design grows louder and more unsettling, and the overall horror experience becomes much more intense.
The game's biggest strength is easily its atmosphere. The combination of dark environments, tense sound design, and constant pressure from the monsters creates some genuinely scary moments. That said, the gameplay doesn't evolve much over the course of the six levels. You're always searching for the toy while avoiding enemies, and although the Dream Effect adds a nice twist, it isn't quite enough to keep the gameplay feeling fresh from beginning to end.
Even so, if you're looking for a short horror game with a creepy atmosphere and a few good scares, this is definitely one worth checking out.
