Frost-Buried Truth is a survival-horror game built around mechanics of escape, hiding, and survival, rather than the typical horror-action genre. The only way to avoid dying in the game is to hide and run. We have no tools or weapons to defend ourselves. This makes me feel defenseless and pushes the fear factor to the highest levels.
The game’s atmosphere is also quite compelling. We’re in a dark facility that triggers feelings of claustrophobia. Since the only things we can do are hide and run—and the atmosphere supports these mechanics—you experience the intended fear in a truly effective way.
The game also has a story running in the background, though it doesn’t take center stage. Rather than telling you the story, the game successfully focuses on delivering elements of fear. The story revolves around human experiments and the research facility where the game takes place. The story revolves around escaping and hiding from people who have mutated as a result of a failed experiment at this research facility, as well as the creatures that emerged from it—all of which necessitate our escape from the facility.
We also need to manage our resources wisely. If we leave the night vision camera on unnecessarily, we might drain the battery and make things even harder.
We can’t say the game will appeal to everyone. It likely won’t have the desired impact on action-horror fans in particular. However, I’m confident that those who enjoy Outlast-style games centered on escape and chase mechanics will find this game enjoyable.
